Steve Muench, Associate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was in town during the holidays and generously offered his time to chat with us. Steve has been a great help to our industry. He assisted the City with the 2006 changes to the pavement section that added a layer of Asphalt Treated Base (ATB) and is the author of our HAPI Asphalt Pavement Guide.
Several subjects were discussed during the 2-hour session including:
- Greenroads, which is a green rating system for road projects. To date about 30 projects have received a Greenroad certification. None of the projects are in Hawaii.
- In Hawaii, we use a PG 64-16 binder specification. Is this adequate, or should we be using a PG 64-22 specification? The binder provided by Asphalt Hawaii can be certified as either depending on what is required by the project specifications.
- The recent pothole repair demonstration on Paiwa Street at the entry to the Waikele Shopping Center. The product being demonstrated was Advance Highway Technologies (AHT-2.0), which is a highly infusible resin that is compatible with asphalt/gravel mixes, has very low viscosity and good wetting. The demonstration was conducted by HAPI member GroupHI.
The Talk Story Session held on 12/22/15 at the HAPI office was attended by 8 people. Please see the photos below.
