On June 18, 2024, a small, but enthusiastic group of people from the industry gathered to chat with Phil Blankenship.
The discussion was a combination of questions provided by the attendees in advance of the session and ad hoc queries. A question provided in advanced asked about the various Balanced Mix Design (BMD) tests; a very relevant topic as HDOT is about to start implementation of BMD. There was also a question about the number of gyrations required, something that HDOT is evaluating for an update of their specifications.
An ad hoc question was about the difference in fibers from Forta-fi and Surface Tech. Phil explained that they are the same material with the only difference being that Forta-fi fibers are 3/4″ long and Surface Tech fibers are 1.5″ long. To learn more about these fibers, he suggested reviewing ASTM D8395 – Standard Specification for Aramid Fiber for Asphalt Mixtures
Thanks to Phil for taking the time and efforts to meet with us during his visit to the islands.
