“Talk Story” with Bob Humer and the DOT Airports Division

Bob Humer, PE., Sr. Regional Engineer (for CA, AZ, NV, OR, WA and HI), Asphalt Institute was in Hawaii. We invited him to lead a “talk story” session with the Oahu DOT Airports Division and several of their consultants. Here are the topics that were discussed:

•Durable Pavements
•How are aggregate size and lift thickness related?
•”Wet weather paving. We could never determine in our specs as when it is okay to pave after rain fall. As the discussion goes “”How dry is dry?”” since our specs specify that the surface must be dry before paving.
•How hot is too hot? What is the maximum temperature of the mix when it arrives at the project site? Any differences between neat and modified asphalts?
•Long Life Asphalt Pavement (LLAP) or Perpetual Pavement, i.e., an asphalt pavement designed and built to last longer than 50 years without requiring major structural rehabilitation or reconstruction and needing only periodic surface renewal in response to distresses confined to the top of the pavement.
•Accelerated paving methods, i.e., using methods or material decreasing placement time, e.g., tackless tack, intelligent compaction.”
•Are other State DOTs getting a longer payment performance than Hawaii? If so, what admixtures, etc. are they adding to the asphalt concrete and will that work here in Hawaii?
•When should you either slurry coat or seal coat?

It was a very successful format and something we hope to do again in the future. Watch for information about future “Talk Story” sessions in our monthly newsletter, Facebook page, and website calendar.
