In an article titled “Plastic Show Promise as Asphalt Fortifiers” in the September issue of Building Industry Hawaii magazine, HDOT Director Ed Sniffen discusses their efforts to incorporate plastic additives into their asphalt pavement mixes. He also says “we are planning to evaluate higher reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content in asphalt surface layers this year.”
According to HAPI Executive Director Jon Young, Balanced Mix Design (BMD) is what the state will be using to check the quality of these mixes. BMD is an advanced approach to designing asphalt mixtures that incorporates performance testing to ensure the mixture can withstand various types of pavement distress, such as rutting and cracking.
