MAIREINFRA 2023 Conference

Our executive director Jon Young attended the very successful Second International Conference on Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Constructed Infrastructure Facilities (MAIREINFRA2) on August 16th through the 19th. The conference was held at the Hilton Hawaii Village in Honolulu, Hawaii. Conference attendees came from all corners of the world including the North America, South America, Asian, and Europe.

MAIREINFRA2 was organized by the International Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructures (iSMARTi). The conference chairman was Hosin “David” Lee. The three main themes of MAIREINFRA2 are: (1) maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements, (2) automation and innovations in bridge and building construction, and (3) safety, disaster resilience, and sustainability.

Young attended all sessions in the theme of maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements. These session covered a variety of contemporary topics. University of Hawaii professor, Dr. Archilla presented his paper titled “Plastic Recycling in Asphalt Concrete Pavements: Preliminary Observations from Hawaii’s Pilot Project.”

Sean Oroho, HDR Inc. presented another paper on a local topic titled: “Accelerated Bridge Construction on Maui’s Hana Highway.”

The conference was not only paper presentations. Attendees had the chance to meet each other at the Ice Breaker at Rainbow Suite and Patio on the evening of August 16th. Both conference days (17th and 18th) ended with a dinner. On August 19th, the conference closed with an optional Tour of Hawaii Cultural Sites followed by Luau dinner provided at Paradise Cove.

Many attendees would agree with the sentiments expressed by one participant in an email to David Lee: “THANK YOU so much for the awesome conference in Honolulu! You and your team totally nailed it! The huge effort you put in was visible, and it made the whole event a blast. From the excellent presentations, interesting discussions and meeting a lot of excellent researchers and promising graduate students, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Dinners were fantastic and super funny. You truly know how to add that special something to the mix!”
