LTAP/HAPI 2026 Best Practices for Asphalt Pavement Workshops

About 90 people attended our Best Practices workshops on March 30 in Kahului, Maui and April 1 in Honolulu, Oahu.

People that attended the all-day workshop learned the following: What is Quality?; Specifications; Pre-construction Recommendations; Mixture Designs; Asphalt Production Facility; Surface Preparation; Materials Transfer; Paving Operations; Compaction; QC/QA Testing; and Troubleshooting Mat Defects.

A quiz game was conducted during each of the all-day workshop. Top finishers received a $10 Starbucks gift card. A couple of the quiz questions are shown below.

The following are things that attendees remembered most about the conference:

  • Very Informative, and very clear on everything being presented.
  • Compaction is the most important aspect of the asphalt.
  • Good broad classroom lesson for asphalt pavement.
  • Asphalt is crucial in road/construction industry.
  • Excellent coordination and instruction.
  • Well planned event. Good overall overview of asphalt paving. Good foods/coffee.
  • The quiz and making top 10 on the leaderboard.

A big Mahalo to Jarrett Welch, from HAPI member Quality Paving Consultants, for sharing his years of practical experience with the group. We have the good fortune of Jarrett being our instructor for this annual training since 2015.

Also thank you to our sponsor LTAP Hawaii who made it possible so many government agency employees to attend at no cost.

The 2027 workshops have been scheduled for April 5 on Kauai (tentative) and April 7 on Oahu.

Please mark your calendar! We hope to see you in April 2027.
