On September 17th, staff from the Department of Transportation, Federal Highways Administration, the City and County of Honolulu, and the University of Hawaii were given a tour of the Kalaeloa Asphalt Terminal hosted by the president of Asphalt Hawaii. The tour started at the loading docks, which provided a good vantage point of the entire facility. Mr. Levins identified and explained the various components of the terminal. The group then moved to the mixing facilities, where we got an up-close look at the mixing tank and storage facility for the SBS pellets used to make polymer- modified asphalt. There were many questions about the production of modified asphalts that were addressed by Mr. Levins and our HAPI guests:
• Mr. Robert P. Humer, PE., Sr. Regional Engineer (for CA, AZ, NV, OR, WA and HI), Asphalt Institute
• Mr. Ron Corun, Director – Asphalt Technical Services, Axeon Specialty Products LLC
• Mr. Chris Lubbers, Technical Sales and Market Dev. Mgr. – Emulsions, Paving and Roofing, Kraton Performance Polymers, Inc .
It was a very educational experience for all of the participants. Please click here for our May 2014 newsletter about modified asphalt usage in Hawaii.
Those that could stay were treated to a tour of Grace Pacific’s Kalaeloa Asphalt Plant hosted by plant manager Mr. Scott Komatsu. Mr. Komatsu took the group on a tour of the facilities, explaining the various components and processes. We started at the silos; next saw the reclaimed asphalt (RAP) processing equipment and dry bins; and then moved on to the mixing drum and warm mix equipment. The tour ended in the control room, which is the heart of the plant. Mr. Komatsu discussed the various activities that are completed in the control room.
