About 45 members and invited guests attended our lunch meeting on January 19 at the Airport Honolulu Hotel.
The program began with our executive director Jon Young giving out his appreciation gift. Gene Albano from the City’s Department of Facilities Maintenance was the recipient of a couple of YETI cups and a bottle of
shochu.
Next up, our four scholarship recipients had the opportunity to introduce themselves:
Justin Kawamura (via Zoom) shared how his interning for Goodfellow Brothers has set him on a path to a career in construction.
Ruimin Lin is an intern at HAPI member SSFM, which provides her the opportunity to work with transportation engineers. She would like to learn more about improving the condition of our asphalt pavements, not only for motor vehicles, but also for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Mackelan Dax Mitchell is a second time recipient of our scholarship. Since last year, he has continued to work in the field as an intern with HAPI member GEOLABS Hawaii. He plans to pursue a masters degree in Geotechnical engineer after he graduates this May.
Saroj Pathak present his master’s project, development of an artificial neural network for back calculation of parameters defining the moduli of pavement layers, and his on-going PhD work, back calculation of pavement granular layer properties using multi-sensors Light-weight Deflectometer (LWD) at different moisture contents and their correlation with the laboratory measured values.

The program closed with our Hall of Fame inductee Dave Funkhouser sharing his experience as a HAPI director and president. Dave worked for Chevron and played a major role in the incorporation of HAPI in 1989. Chevron provided much of the financial support for HAPI in the early years. Dave served as president in 1994 to 1996. He was happy to be a part of our lunch meeting and we appreciated him coming to Hawaii from his home in Nevada to join us.

Everyone had a wonderful time!
