Part 1: Segregation has been a serious concern for the asphalt paving industry for decades. Material segregation in asphalt mixtures is a non-uniform distribution of coarse and fine aggregates through its masses with concentration of coarse materials in some area and fine materials in others. During construction, the coarse and fine asphalt mixtures may cool at different rates and/or at different locations causing temperature segregation. Thermal differential is a phenomenon that has been identified with the introduction of high-precision portable infrared thermal cameras at the paving site. Temperature differential during the laydown operation of asphalt mixtures can cause a compaction problem that leads to the lower-than-desirable pavement density, which consequently results in a considerable reduction of pavement service life. Therefore, it is essential to understand the link between temperature segregation and performance-related mixture properties. This presentation will discuss the causes of thermal segregation and its impact on the quality and performance of asphalt pavements as defined by measurements of density and laboratory mechanistic properties of asphalt mixtures.

Part 2: The Minnesota Department of Transportation is transitioning towards full implementation of intelligent compaction and thermal profiling technologies by 2018. An update will be provided highlighting the implementation schedule, lessons learned/best practices, current specification requirements and viewing and analysis of data within Veta.
