Speaker: Randy West, Ph.D., PE, Director, National Center for Asphalt Technology

Ensuring a long-lasting pavement is the goal of both road builders and road owners. This webinar will discuss the common causes of premature failure of asphalt pavements and how agency and contractor personnel can work toward solutions. During the webinar we will cover the key principles of mix design, impacts of RAP and RAS, appropriate pavement layer thickness, the importance of a good tack coat, and suitable pavement rehabilitation strategies.

Key Takeaways:
– Failing to determine causes of existing distresses is a recipe for poor performing pavement rehabilitation
– Voids in mineral aggregate (VMA) is the primary criteria to assure sufficient asphalt in mixes
– The correct aggregate bulk specific gravity (Gsb) is essential to calculating VMA
– Lowering Ndesign will not make mixes susceptible to rutting, but it can help mix designers make more durable mixes
– Smaller nominal maximum aggregate size mixes are less permeable at equivalent densities
– In-place density is the most important construction quality measurement — we should make sure we get it right
– Following best practices for RAP management are essential to high quality
