DOT Sampling Certification Training – Fall 2016

On August 20, HAPI conducted our inaugural training session for those taking Field Sampling & Testing Module Bituminous (Asphalt) Unit Exam. While the training is geared towards those taking the exam, it is opened to anyone interested in the subject. The session was attended by about 10 people.

Comments from the attendees about what they remembered the most:
– The atmosphere of camaraderie and generous sharing ones experiences in the practice.
– Questions were able to be answered by a knowledgeable instructor
– The videos on how people actually test materials
– Honesty of instructor

General comments from the attendees:

  • Wish there were more detailed scientific background explanations on the how’s and the why these standards came about like why are there two types of bitumen (anionic and cationic) how they react to sampling containers and aggregates etc.
  • I wished it provided a written and verbal test that we could have done during the course.
  • Thank you for taking the time to prepare and present a class for people going thru the testing.

These comments will help us improve the training course. The members of the HAPI committee that developed the course are as follows:

– Jon Young (HAPI)
– Rich Gribbin (Jas W. Glover, Ltd.)
– Lydia Yee and Phillip Ho (R.M. Towill Corporation)
– Forrest Hammann and Jeromy Castro (Grace Pacific LLC)
– Paul Chung (SSFM International)

We plan to have offer this course twice a year to prepare for the certification exam conducted the HDOT every March and September.
