Best Practices for Asphalt Pavement Week (2018)

Best Practices for Asphalt Pavements workshops

This is the 4th year that HAPI has conducted our Best Practices for Asphalt Pavements.  As always, one of the workshops was conducted on Oahu; this year it was Kauai’s turn for the workshop. There was a good mix among the attendees: consultants, contractors, county engineers and inspectors, HDOT, and the military (Army Public Works).

The attendees were  provided a basic understanding of materials, production, placement and compaction operation that combine to produce a quality asphalt pavement.  Here’s what they had to say about the workshop:

– Super Informative (All aspects)
– Excellent Presentation
– Great content and presenter was very knowledgeable.
– Good workshop on the basic properties of asphalt pavement.

And what did they remember most?
– Info on trucking.
– Compaction is most significant factor for pavement performance.
– Showing how a batch plant works.
– QUALITY OVER QUANTITY! KNOW YOUR PROCESSES!

The Next Level workshops

There were 4 Next Level workshops conducted: 3 on Oahu and 1 on Kauai.  The workshops were attended mostly by those that spend the day before at the Best Practices workshop, but there were also attendees that had taken the Best Practices workshop in prior years.

The first half of the workshop is a discussion of paving on steep slopes, paving on flat slopes, paving in the rain, and pavement repairs.  The fun begun with the second half of the workshop were the attendees were the inspectors.

The attendees split into small groups to discuss what they were seeing in a short video of paving in progress. After discussing the video, the attendees reassembled and discussed what they had observed.

What did attendees have to say about “being the inspector”:
– Good for learning and networking.
– Looping videos were great learning tools.
– You can talk more being in a small group.
– It helps to be aware of job inspections and situations.
– It was good to mix up the group!
– Good format, good interaction, good for learning.
– Good to learn from people with various backgrounds and levels of expertise.
– I enjoyed the group setting as it forced us to come up with ideas and work together.|

And what did they remember most?
– A lot of aspects of quality paving are not spec-driven.
– Jon and Jarrett were very friendly and welcoming!
– Common mistakes at the jobsite.
– There are many issues that could occur during paving and how important best practices are.

For all of the workshops, a majority of the attendees said that they would definitely recommend this workshop to a colleague, while the others said they would probably recommend the workshop.
