On March 14th, HAPI members Asphalt Hawaii (Rick Rickard, Terminal Operations Manager) and Grace Pacific, LLC (Scott Komatsu, Vice President, Materials, and Lori Bernard, Plant Manager) gave a tour of their respective terminal and asphalt plant to HDOT Airports (and their consultants: Parsons, AECOM, and Base Management) and FHWA Hawaii.
About twenty people attended. The day got started with a tour of the Asphalt Terminal operated by HAPI member Asphalt Hawaii. The group first learned about the production of modified binder uses SBS and ended the day at the loading dock, where tanks/containers are filled with binder to be delivered to Oahu plants or shipped to plants on the neighbor islands. After the tour of the terminal, the grouped toured the Grace Pacific’s Kalaeloa Plant. Komatsu showed and explained the various parts of a plant, including the cold bins, asphalt tank, drum, and RAP bins. The tour ended at the onsite testing lab. The visit was very informative and provided an opportunity to see how asphalt paving is made.
