The Airfield Asphalt Certification Program (AACP) landed in Hawai‘i on October 11th for ten consecutive days of instruction. NCAT instructors Travis Walbeck, Zane Hartzog, and Jason Moore made the long trip from Auburn, Alabama to deliver this valuable program to our members. Their visit spared local participants the travel time and cost of going to Alabama while providing access to nationally recognized training right here at home.
Last delivered locally in 2021, the course is designed to improve the quality of construction for airfield projects built under UFGS asphalt specifications. Participants gain essential knowledge in airfield asphalt pavements — including specification and testing requirements, quality control, and construction inspection.
This year’s program drew participants from across Hawai‘i as well as from Alaska and the CNMI island of Tinian. The contrasting climates and challenges of these regions offered participants unique insights into materials behavior and construction practices — enriching discussions and broadening perspectives throughout the course.
Instructors Walbeck and Hartzog shared that they appreciated learning about Hawai‘i’s local aggregates and paving conditions. The interactive sessions also encouraged attendees to exchange project experiences and discuss technical solutions to shared challenges. These open conversations are often among the most valuable aspects of the program, as each participant brings a distinct approach shaped by their region’s conditions.
Hosting this course locally underscores HAPI’s commitment to serving as a technical resource for Hawai‘i’s asphalt community — supporting professional growth and advancing quality across the islands. Special thanks go to Jas. W. Glover and Grace Pacific for generously opening their facilities for the training and laboratory sessions.
