
The State Asphalt Pavement Association (SAPA) held its annual summer meeting in Monterey, California, hosted by CalAPA. Executives from 40 state associations gathered to share experiences on road funding, regulations, technical issues, and innovations. The program featured expert speakers such as Associations West CEO Jim Anderson, consultant Leila Moro, and Sam Hassoun of Global Leadership Alliance. National partners, including NAPA President & CEO Audrey Copeland and Asphalt Institute President Reed Ryan, emphasized collaboration between state and national organizations.
The Asphalt Pavement Alliance (APA) presented updates on industry outreach, with new Executive Director Mike Skinner and Technical Director Buzz Powell making appearances. Discussions also covered legislative priorities, environmental initiatives, technical research, and the growing role of women in asphalt leadership. NAPA leaders outlined advocacy strategies for federal infrastructure funding and presented research on asphalt’s sustainability and durability.
Networking and professional development were key themes, with participants praising the exchange of ideas on training, specifications, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. The meeting also honored retiring leaders, including Jon Young of Hawai’i. Overall, the event underscored the value of collaboration, communication, and shared best practices across states.
