This 1-week training program is taught by NCAT for those who are involved with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). Many engineers from all sectors of the asphalt business who entered the work force during the early days of the construction of the interstate system are reaching the end of their careers. These people must be replaced by engineers who are knowledgeable of asphalt materials and their proper use to successfully rebuild the highway sector of the transportation infrastructure.
Goals and Objectives
The purpose of this intensive course is to provide a basic understanding of all phases of HMA technology. Upon completion, the participant will be able to make knowledgeable decisions related to HMA pavements and communicate effectively with asphalt specialists when the need arises.
Program Content
This course consists of 5 days of intensive lectures, demonstration of laboratory tests (no hands-on), and discussions concerning all phases of asphalt technology including:
Asphalt Binders
- refining
- physical properties
- Superpave binder testing and specifications
- modified asphalt binders
Aggregate
- aggregate testing
- required aggregate properties for high performance
Hot Mix Asphalt
- desirable HMA properties
- types of mixes (SMA, OGFC, Superpave)
- Superpave volumetric mix design
Construction
- HMA facility operations
- laydown and compaction methods
- quality control/quality assurance of HMA mixes
HMA Design/Rehabilitation:
- design
- maintenance
- rehabilitation
- recycling
Laboratory demonstrations include asphalt binder characterization tests, aggregate characterization tests, HMA mix design and analysis (including Superpave), and other miscellaneous tests.
Materials
Each participant will be provided a copy of the “Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Handbook,” a binder containing a print-out of all of the PowerPoint presentations, and a CD containing the same. The participant will leave the course with materials needed for general reference when the need arises in practice.
