On October 24th, HAPI members Tensar and Geotech Solutions, Inc. conducted a Use of Geosynthetics (Solving Project Challenges Using Geosynthetics) workshop on Oahu at the Honolulu Country Club.
Speakers from Tensar were Lars Nelson and Garrett Fountain and from their parent company CMC Paul Mitzlaff.
The workshop topics included:
• Designing pavements to reduce initial cost and extend life
• Pavement maintenance: Extend life of asphalt overlays and trench repairs, by delaying and eliminating reflective cracks
• Construction challenges: Constructing over shallow utilities and challenging subgrades (i.e. soft, expansive, and collapsible soils)
• Drainage: Reduce or eliminate thick expensive drainage layers
• Shallow foundations: Design shallow footings over soft soil, calculate bearing capacity and settlement
• Working Platforms: Design safe stabilized working platforms to support heavy equipment such as cranes, piling rigs
• MSE Wall Solutions: Wire-formed retaining wall system
New for this year’s workshop was a presentation of CMC’s InQuik® Bridge System, an innovative bridge system that is revolutionizing bridge construction, expediting project schedules and offering substantial cost savings and an introduction to Vialytics, a smart phone mounted intelligent road management system that uses up-to-date image data and automatic condition evaluation to help consultants, municipalities, and counties digitize their road management processes.
What are some of the things attendees remembered most about the workshops:
- Workshop was great and informative.
- Design with an InterAX NX850 enhance subgrade R-value = 50.
- Materials that can be used to repave asphalt concrete.
- Just over the years passed newer and improved materials along with installation application has changed which helps contractors to meet the challenges of ground stabilization.
We plan to be back next October and hope that you will join us.
