2023 Inaugural Castle High School Career Exposure Fair

Jon and Lynn Young represented HAPI at the 2023 Inaugural Castle High School Career Exposure Fair on December 1st from 8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. The event was attended by 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders, each grade had their own time slot. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about our industry. Several students made it a point to visit our table.

Just under 50 companies, including HAPI member Papé Machinery, and organizations were on-hand to help students plan their futures. Represented at the event were colleges, universities, trades, military, and retail stores (see photos below). The floor plan of the gym with the table layout is shown at the very end of this article.

The students were provided an interesting experience to increase their social capital with quality introductions to organizations across the state and beyond. Exposure Fair sequence:

  • One minute to pick an organization while music is playing.
  • Select an organization and stand on an available dot on the floor. If no dots are available, find another organization with a spot available and return to the former organization during the next round.
  • Once the music stops, you will stay with that organization for 5 minutes of engagement.
  • When the music begins again, you can move around the fair to select another organization. The 1-min move / 5-min stop sequence will continue throughout, so come ready for demonstrations, activities, discussions, and much, much, more.
  • Have more questions for that organization? You’re welcome to stay or come back for another 5-minute round anytime throughout your time at the Exposure Fair.

At our table, students could help themselves to a HAPI sticker, a HAPI pencil, a 3 Reasons Why the Asphalt Industry is an Awesome Career Choice Brochure, and/or a Careers in the Asphalt Industry flyer.

HAPI Paving Train Activity

About 70 students participated in our Paving Train Activity for a chance to win a $10 gift card from Starbucks. Students were given a photo of a piece of construction equipment and had to correctly match it with one of the descriptions shown in the photo above. If they matched it correctly, they were eligible to enter a drawing to win a $10 gift card.

Students also participated in the Civil Engineering Career quiz game. Students could select a question about opportunities at the University of Hawaii, starting salary at the City and County of Honolulu, and the various specialties in Civil Engineering. About 20 students answered their question correctly and were eligible to enter a drawing to win a $10 gift card.

Ryan Saito, STEM Coordinator, James B. Castle High School and his team put on an excellent event. We hope to participate in future events at Castle High School.
