The goal of this scholarship is to assist college students pursing a degree in civil engineering, construction management, construction engineering, and other degrees related to the design and construction infrastructure improvements.
We are pleased to introduce you to the 2020 HAPI Scholarship Recipients.
$1,000 Scholarship Recipients
Emily Mitra Emily is a second time scholarship recipient and a sophomore at the Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering at California Baptist University studying Construction Management. She says that she has learned so much about the construction industry as well as herself during her first year of college. She has not wavered from her goal to start her own company on Maui hiring former inmates to help them transition back into the workforce. The company will focus on buying and renovating homes to make them more affordable for Hawaii’s residents.
Danae Dunn Danae, a graduate of Iolani School, is in her first semester of college at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She has never been more driven to chase after her aspirations and goals. Her devotion to service and leadership in the community of Hawaii has fostered her desire to solve problems and work in a team environment. She is excited to utilize her skills and past experiences to focus on obtaining a civil engineering degree. She is passionate about improving the life of her community which is why she is keen on learning more about the opportunities the asphalt industry provides.
$500 Scholarship Recipients
Connor Kagamida Connor is enrolled as a Junior at the University of Hawaii’s College of Engineering. He is a second time scholarship recipient. Receiving the HAPI scholarship last year caused him to be more interested in the applications of asphalt. His college goals have not changed from last year. He strives to become president of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter by his senior year and graduate with at least Magna Cum Laude status. His career goal is to become an environmental engineer.
Debbi Sakai Debbi is currently a student in the Architectural Engineering and CAD Technologies program at Honolulu Community College with a focus on Construction Management. Upon graduating from the AEC program in the spring of 2020 she plans to continue her education at the College of Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her goal is to become a construction manager with the title of PE and CM. Her hope to gain a better understanding of the asphalt industry and with that knowledge help improve Hawaii’s roadways. She is eager to continue developing her skillset in this area of expertise and hopes to one day stand alongside the outstanding professionals who help shape this industry.
Scholarship Recipients at HAPI Lunch Meeting
At our HAPI January 2020 lunch meeting, the scholarship recipients gave a brief presentation about themselves and what receiving the scholarship met to them.
