2016 Best Practices for Asphalt Pavement Workshops

Jarrett Welch from HAPI member Quality Paving Consultants (QPC) was in town to present two Best Practices for Asphalt Pavement Workshops. The workshop on Oahu was attended by 18 people, was a mix group of contractors, consultants, government agencies and developers. Eleven people attended the Hilo workshop, including 9 from the HDOT Hawaii District Office.

This the second year in a row that HAPI has conducted this workshop. New to this year’s workshop was the HAPI Pop Quiz and the use of video shot from a drone. The visuals provided by the video of an asphalt plant took the audience on an educational and excellent tour of the facility from the loading of the aggregate in the cold feed bins to the loading of the trucks with hot mix asphalt. There were also videos of compaction in progress, material transfer vehicles in action, as well as others.

Those responding to our evaluation survey found the workshop well-presented and informative. A majority said that they would definitely recommend the workshop to a colleague. They will get their opportunity to do so when the workshop returns next April/May to Oahu and Maui.

For a list of the attendees and photos, please go to the HAPI calendar event; it will be after the event details. Click here for the Oahu workshop and click here for the Hilo workshop.
