LTAP/HAPI 2024 Best Practices for Asphalt Pavement Workshops

Over 150 people attended our Best Practices workshops on April 22 and 23 in Hilo and April 24, 25, and 26 in Honolulu.

People that attended the all-day workshop on April 22, 24, and 26 learned the following: What is Quality?; Specifications; Pre-construction Recommendations; Mixture Designs; Asphalt Production Facility; Surface Preparation; Materials Transfer; Paving Operations; Compaction; QC/QA Testing; and Troubleshooting Mat Defects.

People that attended the three-hour workshop on April 23 and 25 discussed videos of paving and compaction. Many of the videos featured the County of Hawaii paving crew.

A quiz game was conducted during each of the all-day workshop. Top finishers received a $10 Starbucks gift card. A couple of the quiz questions are shown below.

The following are things that attendees remembered most about the conference:

Jarrett is very knowledgeable and represents the paving industry very well.
Compaction is critical to pavement performance.
The videos shown and discussions to help detect inappropriate and/or insufficient work being done and passing inspections.
The material used in videos was very relevant to what we do and encounter in the field.
Jarrett’s presentation skills and keeping the audience engaged.
The quizzes, reinforced my knowledge of AC Paving.

The 2025 workshops have been scheduled for April 21 on Maui and April 23 on Oahu. We will be changing the format to combine the all-day best practices workshop and three hour next level workshop into a single day session.
