2023 Use of Geosynthetics Workshops

HAPI members Tensar International and Corporation and Geotech Solutions, Inc. conducted a Use of Geosynthetics workshop on Hawaii Island (10/23) at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel and Oahu (10/24) at Pearl Country Club.

Speakers from Tensar were Lars Nelson, Tommy James, and Garrett Fountain and from Geotech Solutions was Troy Ogasawara.

The workshop on Hawaii island discussed geogrid mechanics and modeling geogrid performance, designing with geogrids using Tensar + software, and scour protection.

The Oahu workshop discussed the same topics as in Hilo, but also had a session on asphalt mix design and thickness considerations for heavily loaded pavements (ports, intermodal facilities, etc.).

What are some of the things attendees remembered most about the workshops?
– Learning about the various Tensar products and their application.
– The geogrids discussed in the presentation can help to extend the performance life of the AC by 3-5 times.

The workshops this year were conducted differently from past years. Instead of the traditional breakfast before the workshop, lunch was served prior to the start of the Hawaii Island workshop and the Oahu workshop was followed by a Pau Hana. As one attendee remarked: The networking portion was great as we were able to talk with colleagues outside of the work environment.”
