2022 SAPA Summer Meeting

The Annual SAPA Summer Meeting was held in New York City during the first week in August. It was a wonderful event that combine group family activities along with the two day business meeting. Click here to view a 5-minute video that captures all of the action.

Highlights of the 2-day business meeting included:
• Larry Patrick’s (OAPA) efforts acknowledge as our 2020 chairperson.
• Russell Snyder (CalAPA) approved as treasurer for 2023.
• Women of Asphalt presentation and discussion.
• NAPA Climate Leadership & Sustainability Task Force Update.
• Round table discussion of various industry issue.
• SAPA, NAPA, and APA partnering session.
• “Back to the Future” group activity.
• The future of our industry group discussion.

The annual meeting was also an opportunity for an in-person SAPA Administrative Professionals Working Group (SAPWG) meeting. Several topics were discussed, most importantly was how to move this group forward.

There were several group family activities. Things got started on Saturday with attending a Yankee’s game from a suite.

On Sunday morning, our group took a guided tour of the 9/11 Museum and Memorial, that recounted things that happened on that infamous day. We reconvened later that day for our traditional Sunday dinner Makitiki in the South Street Seaport.

The final group activity was our Monday dinner at Ellis Island. The ferry taking us to Ellis Island circled around the Statue of Liberty. Our delicious dinner was followed by a self-guided tour of the Ellis Island Immigration Museum.

As always the spouses/guests enjoyed themselves while the state executives were in their business meeting. On Monday, the group went on an Open Top Bus Tour of NYC through lower Manhattan followed by lunch at Junior’s Cheesecake in Times Square.

On Tuesday, they went on a Lower East Side Tenement Museum Tour. They viewed inside tenement buildings/museum and had a guided tour of the neighborhood describing immigrant life at that time,

The meeting was planned and hosted by past chairperson Bruce Barkevich (NY) and current chairperson Kevin Monaco (NJ). Photos of the various activities are included below.

The SAPAs are looking forward to next year’s meeting in Park City that is being hosted by the Utah Asphalt Pavement Association.
