Construction Career Day (CCD) was conducted on September 29 and 30 at the lower Aloha Stadium parking lot. The event attracted hundreds of students from middle schools, high schools, and other educational institutions. Click here for the event guide.
HAPI participated as an exhibitor. Just under 100 students visited our table manned by Jon Young and Lynn Young. Students could help themselves to a HAPI pencil or HAPI sticker.
Other products and activities at our table included the following:
A 4-page brochure gives 3 reasons why the asphalt industry is an awesome career choice. Click here for additional information about the brochure. A flyer (click here to download) with links to the NAPA Career Pathways website and the Georgia Road Jobs website was also available.
Several students left our table with these in hand. More importantly, Jon Young shared these handouts with advisors, counselors, and teachers for them to share the information provided with their students.
The “Paving Train” activity was popular among the students. The activity shows the procedure and equipment needed to turn a road in disrepair into a newly paved smooth riding pavement. Students were given a photo of a piece of construction equipment. If a student correctly matches the photo of the equipment with the description of the equipment, they can enter to win a $25 gift card. About 80 students made the correct match. The winner on 9/29 was a student from Kalakaua Middle School; on 9/30 it was a student from Kailua High School. Click here for additional information about this activity.
In addition to the Paving Train game, on day 2, we also had a continuous 2-minute loop video to augment our efforts to educate the students about the various tasks involved with resurfacing a road. Several students viewed the video and asked questions about what they were seeing.
HAPI thanks the students and faculty that stopped by our table. We hope that they gained knowledge of the various careers in the asphalt industry and of the equipment used to construct an asphalt pavement.
