In 2018, we announced our first annual Hawaii Asphalt Paving Industry Scholarship. The goal of this scholarship is to assist college students pursing a degree in civil engineering, construction management, construction engineering, and other degrees related to the design and construction infrastructure improvements.
We are pleased to introduce you to the 2019 HAPI Scholarship Recipients.
$1,000 Scholarship Reciepents
Emily Mitra
Emily grew up on the island of Maui and attended Maui High School. Being heavily involved in 4-H and Student Government, she learned to appreciate the acts of helping others and the importance of being part of enhancing the community. She is a freshman at the Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering at California Baptist University studying Construction Management. Her goal is to start her own company hiring former inmates to help them transition back into the workforce. The company will focus on buying and renovating homes to make them more affordable for Hawaii’s residents.
Paul Hutchinson
Paul is currently enrolled as a junior at the University of Hawaii and is seeking a degree in both engineering and finance. He is a graduate of Waialua High and Intermediate School and volunteers with the school’s robotics team and girls water polo team. He also tutors math to students in their college preparatory classes. At the University of Hawaii, Paul maintains a 4.0 GPA and been selected as the Albert Simone Presidential Scholar, an honor bestowed on the top junior in the University of Hawaii system. He active in the student chapter of the America Society of Civil Engineers.

Connor Kagamida
Connor is enrolled as a sophomore at the University of Hawaii’s College of Engineering. His college goals are to become president of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter by his senior year and graduate with at least Magna Cum Laude status. His career goal is to become an environmental engineer. He plans to explore ways the asphalt industry can postively impact sustainability and the environment.
Lester Calaro
Lester is attending the University of Hawaii pursuing a Bachelor in Science Degree in Civil Engineering with the intentions of working in the construction industry. He’s getting a jump start to his career by working as an intern for a privately held asphalt paving construction company. The reason why he applied for the scholarship is because his appreciation for asphalt paving has grown after understanding the aspects behind it.
