Specifying Asphalt Pavement Mixes (01/27/21) @ Zoom Presentation
Jan 27 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Specifying Asphalt Pavement Mixes
Speaker: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Paving Industry

It is important that the desired asphalt mix gets specified on the plans and in the specifications. This presentation reviews aggregate gradations and binders used in Hawaii and how they are shown in the plans and specifications.

PaveXpress for Porous Asphalt Design (02/03/21) @ Zoom Presentation
Feb 3 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: PaveXpress for Porous Asphalt Design
Speaker: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Pavement Industry

This session will be an overview of PaveXpress and PaveInstruct, followed by the design of a porous asphalt section.

PAVExpress is a free web-based pavement design tool available for use by local agencies, engineers, and architects who need a reliable way to quickly determine the necessary pavement thickness for a given section of roadway or project.

The PAVEInstruct learning module is a web-based pavement design education system with video instruction by leading industry experts. PAVEInstruct accompanies PAVEXpress.

You be the inspector! (02/10/21) @ Zoom Presentation
Feb 10 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: You be the inspector!
Speaker: Jarrett Welch, Consultant, Quality Paving Consultants

In this session, you are the inspector at paving project site. The participants will view short (30-120 second) videos of various paving situations. After viewing each video, a group discussion moderated by the instructor will be conducted about the situation shown in the video.

GPR for GPR for Pavement Thickness Determination (02/17/21) @ Zoom Presentation
Feb 17 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: GPR for Pavement Thickness Determination
Speaker: Dr. Arudi Rajagopal

Thickness of pavement layers is an important input for various routine activities such as: developing Pavement Management System, analysis of FWD data, overlay design, performance prediction, failure investigations and so on. Currently most agencies rely on core samples or sometimes the least historic documents. GPR is being used by many State DOTs and a few local agencies during the last decade to non-destructively collect pavement structure data. Several case studies are available comparing thickness of pavement layers from GPR and core samples. In this presentation, we compile a few case studies, reported margin of error and field variables affecting the results.

Introduction to Balanced Mix Design (02/24/21) @ Zoom Presentation
Feb 24 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Title: Intro to Balanced Mix Design
Speaker: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Pavement Industry

Balanced Mix Design (BMD) is coming soon to Hawaii. Working together, HDOT and HAPI, moving forward with the implementation.

BMD is an enhanced approach to designing asphalt paving mixtures to achieve a satisfactory balance between rutting resistance and crack resistance. It promises to result in longer lasting asphalt pavements.

This session will cover the basics of BMD and what’s happening in other states.

Understanding a Job Mix Formula Submittal Workshop – Virtual 3/11/21 @ HAPI Office
Mar 11 @ 8:30 am – 10:30 am

Speaker: Jon M. Young, PE, Hawaii Asphalt Pavement Industry

Who Should Attend: Contractors, engineers, and construction managers unfamiliar with a JMF submittal.

The job mix formula (JMF) is the recommended mixture, which includes aggregate gradation and asphalt binder type, to meet the project specifications. The JMF submittal is prepared by the paving contractor for any project that requires the construction of an asphalt pavement. The submittal is typically reviewed by the engineer of record.

This 90 to 120-minute, including questions and answers, workshop will discuss 1) the basics of asphalt pavement mixes, by discussion the Marshall method, which is the most widely used in Hawaii, 2) the production of asphalt pavements, and 3) how the JMF submittal relates to the project specification, using the Department of Transportation, 2005 Standard Specifications as an example.

Takeaways:
– A basic understanding of asphalt pavement mixes
– A basic understanding of how asphalt pavements are produced
– An understanding of how to review the JMF submittal for conformance to a specification

Certificate Provided: 2.0 PDHs are available for attending this workshop.
Parking: Parking in front of the building
