Oct 21 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Intro to High Friction Surface Treatments
Speaker: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Pavement Industry

High-Friction Surface Treatment (HSFT) is not a new product, but it is something relatively new to streets and highways in Hawaii. What is a HFST, where is it used, and how is it installed? Learn how a HSFT improves the safety of the road.

Specifying Asphalt Pavement Mixes (10/28/20) @ Zoom Presentation
Oct 28 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Specifying Asphalt Pavement Mixes
Speaker: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Paving Industry

It is important that the desired asphalt mix gets specified on the plans and in the specifications. This presentation reviews aggregate gradations and binders used in Hawaii and how they are shown in the plans and specifications.

Paving Equipment – Mat Defects (11/04/20) @ Zoom Presentation
Nov 4 @ 6:20 am – 7:20 am

Title: Paving Equipment – Mat Defects
Speaker: Todd Mansell, Product Application Specialist, Caterpillar

Meeting and exceeding asphalt construction specifications on field projects relies on proper paving equipment maintenance, setup, and operation. This session will focus on what to look for on the paving equipment when you see mat defects.

Use of Geosynthetics for Asphalt Pavements @ Zoom Presentation
Nov 12 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Guest Speakers from Tensar:
– Lars Nelson and Dennis Rogers

This 2-hour workshop will discuss the use of geosynthetics to maximize the life of asphalt concrete pavements through design and construction. Topics may include the following:

• Reconstruction/New Construction – Subgrade improvement of reconstruction/new construction pavements
• Reconstruction/New Construction – Pavement optimization, life extension and structural section reduction
• Rehabilitation – Overlay design, reinforcing layers, waterproofing layers
• Drainage – Horizontal drainage design, horizontal geosynthetics

In addition, the use of geosynthetics in recent Hawaii projects will be featured.

Takeaways:
– Become familiar with geosynthetics
– Learn on they can benefit the design of an asphalt pavement section
– Understand how they are installed in the pavement section

Introduction to Balanced Mix Design (11/18/20) @ Zoom Presentation
Nov 18 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Intro to Balanced Mix Design
Speaker: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Pavement Industry

Balanced Mix Design (BMD) is coming soon to Hawaii. Working together, HDOT and HAPI, moving forward with the implementation.

BMD is an enhanced approach to designing asphalt paving mixtures to achieve a satisfactory balance between rutting resistance and crack resistance. It promises to result in longer lasting asphalt pavements.

This session will cover the basics of BMD and what’s happening in other states.

Smoothness 101 (12/02/20) @ Zoom Presentation
Dec 2 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Smoothness 101
Speaker: Brandon Silva, Vice President, Pavement Management Solutions, Inc.

Our HDOT has a smoothness specification for construction of new and resurfacing of existing asphalt paved roads. This session is an introduction to smoothness and will cover:
– What is pavement smoothness
– What affects pavement smoothness
– Key terms used such as IRI
– Equipment used to measure smoothness
In addition to our speaker, HAPI members Ames Engineering, Inc. and SSI will be on hand for questions and answers.

Intro to Stone Matrix Asphalt (12/16/20) @ Zoom Presentation
Dec 16 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Intro to Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA)
Speakers: Jon M. Young, Hawaii Asphalt Paving Industry

This session will introduce Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA). SMA is a gap-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) originally developed in Europe to maximize rutting resistance and durability. The mix design goal is to create stone-on-stone contact within the mixture. Since aggregates do not deform as much as asphalt binder under load, this stone-on-stone contact greatly reduces rutting.
