To raise awareness of SMA, HAPI and the State Highways Division’s Work Force Development Program are partnering to bring the National Center for Asphalt Technology’s SMA design and construction training to Hawaii.

Schedule:
– 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Registration
– 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. morning sessions
– 12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch (provided)
– 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. afternoon sessions

SPEAKER BIO: Don Watson, NCAT Research Engineer

Don Watson received his B.S. in Civil Engineering Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University in 1986 while working for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). During his 32 year career with GDOT, Don served as Materials Technician, Asphalt Field Technical Services Engineer, State Asphalt Design Engineer, State Bituminous Construction Engineer, and Assistant State Materials and Research Engineer over bituminous construction, concrete construction, pit and quarry operations, and field testing units. He was involved in the mix design and construction of the first SMA test section project placed in Georgia in 1991, and assisted Washington DOT with the construction of their first SMA project in 1999.

Don has worked at NCAT for 18 years as Research Engineer and has experience in laboratory and field testing, construction inspection, forensic investigation of construction problems, conducting pavement evaluations, writing specifications and guidelines for materials and construction procedures, and developing and conducting training courses for both agencies and asphalt industry.

Don is well-known for his experience related to materials and construction within the asphalt industry and has been actively involved in TRB committees related to asphalt materials, construction issues, and pavement surface requirements. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Asphalt User/Producer Group for 24 years. He is also a member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists and the International Society for Asphalt Pavements. Don is a registered professional engineer in the states of Georgia and Alabama.
