David Gent Bio

Mr. Gent is a life-long resident of Washington state. He has lived, studied and worked in the Puget Sound area since entering the University of Washington in 1977. As an undergraduate, Dave was involved in original paving materials research and forensic pavement engineering as a research and laboratory assistant to Dr. Ron Terrel and Dr. Joe Mahoney and he has remained employed in the hot mix asphalt (HMA) industry all his professional life.

Dave is a registered Professional Engineer and has both a BSCE degree from the University of Washington and an MBA from City University of Seattle.

Dave worked throughout the state estimating and managing heavy civil and HMA construction projects for 32+ years for two private companies – Wilder Construction Co., Inc. (1982 – 2002) and ICON Materials (2002 – 2014). He was the VP and General Manager of ICON at the time he accepted his current position. As a contractor employee, Dave was directly involved in the estimating, production and placement of over 5 million tons of HMA.

Dave is currently the Executive Director and Technical Director of the WAPA. His association represents the private companies that manufacture 98+% of the HMA produced in Washington. WAPA’s Regular Member companies also construct the majority of public works and private paving projects within the state. Dave joined WAPA in August of 2014. Prior to accepting his current position, he was a past president of WAPA and served as a Board of Directors/ Regular Member representative for more than two decades.

Appreciate gift giveaway:  At each lunch meeting, our executive director, Jon Young, gives away a gift he has purchased as a token of his appreciation for the support by the members, industry partners and friends at making HAPI a success.
