Title: Use of Geosynthetics for Asphalt Pavements

Speakers:
– Troy Ogasawara – President, Geotech Solutions, Inc.
– Garrett Fountain, PE, GE, West Area Director of Engineering, Tensar International Corp.
– Lars Nelson, PE, Pacific South Manager, Tensar International Corp.
– Dennis Rogers, Pavement Maintenance Manager-West, Tensar International Corp.

This 3-hour workshop will discuss the use of geosynthetics to maximize the life of Flexible pavements through design and construction. The workshop agenda is as follows:

How to Construct Over Challenging Subgrade Conditions:
– When encountering soft subgrades, expansive soils, seismic induced settlements, drainage issues, learn how to design a cost-effective construction platform to keep the project moving and mitigate future settlements.

Structural Pavement design for flexible pavements. Design alternatives include:
– Structural Section Reduction, resulting in lower initial cost and avoidance/protection of shallow utilities.
– Life Extension, resulting in improved reliability and reduced maintenance.

Rehabilitation and Maintenance
– Learn how to reinforce asphalt layers with paving mats and grids to minimize reflective cracking, carry more traffic, and waterproof cracked layers.

In addition, the use of geosynthetics in recent Hawaii projects will be featured.

Takeaways:
– Become familiar with geosynthetics
– Learn on they can benefit (reduce cost or extend the life) the design of an asphalt pavement section
– Understand how they are installed in the pavement section
– Get the latest on new testing, specifications, and on Hawaii best practice that will help you maximize the benefit of geosynthetics on your next project
