Workshop Description:

The first half of the workshop is a discussion of paving on steep slopes, paving on flat slopes, paving in the rain, and pavement repairs. These topics will be presented as starting point for a discussion. In the second half, attendees will be inspectors.

Discussion Topics:

Steep Slopes: What are the considerations for paving on roads with steep slopes? How about driveways with slopes exceeding 15%? Is it best to pave in an uphill direction?

Flat Slopes: Parking lots and residential roads with longitudinal slopes of less than 2% are a common occurrence in certain areas of the islands that are closer to the shore. Is the approach to paving flat slopes different? Do flat slopes result in any problems (i.e. bird baths)?
Other concerns? What locations required hand work? How are tight radius (corners and cul de sacs) paved?

Paving in the Rain: How wet is too wet? Opinions and methods to determine the degree of wetness vary. What happens if it rains after the paving has started?

Pavement Repairs: What are the different approaches to repair a pothole? Are there different ways to do a patch? How about a trench restoration?

You are the Inspector:

For the second half of the workshop, you will be the inspector at a paving project. A short video of paving in progress will be shown. The attendees will then be split into small groups to discuss what they see in the video. Is the paving being done correctly? The audience will gather and one of the groups will lead the discussion of what they saw.

There will be three situations presented during the workshop.
